I'm addicted to reading the Latest Things page... but I'm not sure the DW etiqutte when it comes to commenting on a post in latest things from someone not in your circle.

So if you're you reading this post on Latest Things right now!!!
I would love your views:

1)Would you comment on a post you've seen on Latest Things?

2)Would it make a difference if it was someone's personal journal? A comm?

3)Has anyone stumbled on your post/journal/comm using Latest Things?

4)Did they tell you how they found you (i.e, came here via Latest Thing's)?

5)Did you like people dropping in? Wish they would shoo? Anything else?

Hi! I saw this on the 3W4DW Latest Things page!

1. I'd comment on a post from Latest Things, but only in special circumstances, like Three Weeks For Dreamwidth, or if a post (like this one) specifically asks for the input of someone unfamiliar.

2. Yep. I'd be much more likely to comment in a community than a personal journal. I kind of think of it like a public event (a community) versus seeing someone in the front yard of hir house (a personal journal); communities are more likely to accept strangers.

3. Yeah, especially during 3W4DW. I've gained subscribers through a Latest Things visit.

4. Again, yes.

5. I think, if my posts are public, they're free game. Provided a commenter's courteous, I have no problems if zie contributes.

Here via DW latest. Hi!

1) As you can see, I would. I actually do so quite often.

2) Makes no difference to me - but when it's clearly very very personal I don't butt in.

3 - 5) Sadly, no one's dropped in via DW latest or via network.

Also here via Latest Things!

1) Yes, as demonstrated by this comment *g*.

2) Yes, in that I'm more cautious about commenting when it's someone's personal journal. Generally, I'll put in my comment title something like "Here via Latest Things, hope that's okay", and hope it doesn't weird them out.

3) and 4) I don't know. I don't recall anyone mentioning it, but obviously I don't know if people found me via the Latest feed and just didn't mention in.

5) I'm pretty used to people dropping in (especially after I inadvertently ended up being linkspam central during Racefail). If they're cool and friendly, it's great.

(Obviously, if someone turns up out of the blue to spam or insult me or pick a fight, that's different. But that's true no matter how they found me.)

1) This may be a bit redundant, but yes. (Although it's 3w4dw that has me reading).
2) Not really, though I'd probably comment to an interesting journal as a hello, but subscribe to a comm.
3&4) Yes.
5) I'm well up for that; it's what I figured public posts were for (having had a totally locked account at lj I'm making public posts (and comments in them) here in an effort to help build the community.)

1. Yes, but generally only if it's a post that looks like it's been made for public consumption - fannish posts, meta, 3w4dw-tagged, etc.

2. I wouldn't have any qualms about posting to a comm at all. If it was a personal journal I'd probably be more likely to just look and move on without commenting.

4 & 3. No; so, not to my knowledge.

5. I'm all for drop-ins, though I wouldn't mind a "here via Latest Things" so I could be slightly less confused as to how they found me. :)

1.- Yes, I'd comment! (see: this) If the entry is engaging and I feel I can add something to the conversation, why not?

2.- I guess a comm is, by definition, more open to the people, more like a public space. But still, don't think it'd make any difference.

3.- Yes, during the first day of 3W4DW.
(I have to say, though, that I didn't updated my dw journal because I'm still ultimating the import from lj)

4.- Well, no, but it wasn't all that hard to guess in this case ;)

5.- I like people dropping in, yes! The more, the merrier. You get to know some interesting people by these kinds of unexpected comments.

1. I haven't been using Latest Things much until this fest, but, yes, I would and have commented on posts.

2. No. I am more likely to leave a comment, though, if the OP is posing a question or looking for something/information.

3. Not that I know of. I've gotten comments from some random users, but I'm not sure if they came through Latest Things or Network.

4. Sometimes, usually when it's via some kind of link round-up.

5. Yes, I love people dropping in, especially on posts that haven't had any comments yet!

1)Would you comment on a post you've seen on Latest Things?
Normally, no, but Three Weeks for Dreamwidth feels like this great big special thing, and I am commenting all over the place.

2)Would it make a difference if it was someone's personal journal? A comm?
I'd say I'm more likely to comment in a comm than someone's personal journal. I always feel so awkward when commenting in a stranger's journal unless invited by a poll or some such.

3)Has anyone stumbled on your post/journal/comm using Latest Things?
Not that I'm aware of.

4)Did they tell you how they found you (i.e, came here via Latest Thing's)?
Nope because no one's stopped by from Latest Things.

5)Did you like people dropping in? Wish they would shoo? Anything else?
I absolutely wouldn't mind at all if people dropped by and commented on any post I made public. ^__^

Hi! I'm here from the latest things page! :D

1)Would you comment on a post you've seen on Latest Things? Yep, obvs.

2)Would it make a difference if it was someone's personal journal? A comm? Nope, either, if I found something cool (like [personal profile] argosy's post where she put up a recording of her doing Johnny Cash's Solitary Man). Probably rec it, too.

3)Has anyone stumbled on your post/journal/comm using Latest Things? Yep, and I've gotten a few new subscribers from it.

4)Did they tell you how they found you (i.e, came here via Latest Thing's)? Sometimes... I mean, yes, but I'm guessing that some people haven't told me...

5)Did you like people dropping in? Wish they would shoo? Anything else? I love people dropping in. It's one of my favorite things about Dreamwidth.
